Skin cancer is the most common cancer worldwide, and early detection can make a life-saving difference. While many associate skin cancer with summer, the risk is present year-round.
Why Regular Skin Checks Matter
A full-body skin exam allows us to detect skin cancer early, when treatment is most effective. Many types of skin cancer, including melanoma, basal cell carcinoma (BCC), and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), can develop silently, with minimal symptoms.
Early diagnosis can prevent serious complications and reduce the need for extensive treatment. If caught early, melanoma—the deadliest form of skin cancer—has a 99% five-year survival rate.
What Happens During a Skin Check?
A professional skin check is quick, painless, and essential for your health. Here’s what to expect:
1. Review of Your Skin History – We’ll discuss any skin concerns, changes you’ve noticed, and your risk factors (family history, sun exposure, past sunburns, etc.).
2. Full-Body Skin Exam – Using a dermatoscope (a magnifying tool with light), we carefully examine moles, spots, and lesions from head to toe.
3. Spot Assessment – If we find anything unusual, we may:
- Monitor the lesion with photos and follow-up.
- Perform a biopsy, removing a small sample for lab testing.
- Recommend removal, if needed, for further evaluation or treatment.
The ABCDEs of Melanoma
Melanoma can be tricky to spot, but the ABCDE rule helps identify concerning moles:
- A – Asymmetry: One half of the mole doesn’t match the other.
- B – Border: Irregular, jagged, or blurred edges.
- C – Color: Uneven color with shades of brown, black, red, white, or blue.
- D – Diameter: Larger than 6 mm (about the size of a pencil eraser).
- E – Evolving: Any change in size, shape, or color over time.
When to Get Checked
- At least once a year for a routine skin exam.
- More often if you have a history of skin cancer, many moles, or high sun exposure.
- Immediately if you notice any suspicious skin changes.
Protect Your Skin Year-Round
- Wear SPF 30+ sunscreen daily, even in winter.
- Avoid tanning beds and excessive sun exposure.
- Examine your skin monthly at home using the ABCDE rule.
